Initiative Overview

About this initiative

Overview

The One Child, One Tree Programme is an environmental initiative aimed at encouraging tree planting, environmental stewardship and greater awareness of the importance of protecting Ghana’s natural environment.

The Programme forms part of the broader Tree for Life initiative and supports national efforts to increase tree cover, restore degraded landscapes and promote environmental responsibility.

Programme Objective

The Programme seeks to encourage children and young people to participate directly in environmental restoration by supporting tree planting and nurturing planted trees.

It also provides an opportunity to strengthen environmental education and promote long-term responsibility for Ghana’s natural resources.

National Tree-Planting Target

The initiative is being scaled towards a national target of one million trees under the Tree for Life programme.

Implementation involves collaboration with relevant institutions, particularly the Forestry Commission and educational institutions.

Environmental Education

Beyond tree planting, the Programme provides a platform for promoting environmental awareness among students and young people.

Participation in tree planting is intended to strengthen understanding of:

  • climate change;
  • biodiversity conservation;
  • land restoration;
  • sustainable natural-resource management; and
  • individual responsibility for environmental protection.

Partnerships

The Ministry works with the Forestry Commission, educational institutions and other relevant stakeholders to support implementation of the Programme.

Expected Contribution

The One Child, One Tree Programme is expected to contribute to increased tree cover, improved environmental awareness and stronger participation by young people in Ghana’s environmental sustainability agenda.
