E-Waste Management
Electronic Waste Management Programme
Supports environmentally sound management of electronic waste through improved collection, recycling, worker capacity development and formalisation of Ghana's e-waste management system.
Programme Overview
About this programme
Overview
The Electronic Waste Management Programme supports Ghana’s efforts to improve the environmentally sound collection, handling, recycling and management of electrical and electronic waste.
The Programme forms part of the Ministry’s wider environmental sustainability and circular-economy agenda.
Programme Objectives
The Programme seeks to:
- strengthen environmentally sound e-waste management;
- improve collection and recycling systems;
- support the formalisation of e-waste collection activities;
- strengthen the capacity of workers involved in the e-waste sector;
- promote safer and more sustainable recycling practices; and
- reduce environmental and public-health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal.
Collection Systems
The Programme supports the formalisation and expansion of collection centres to improve the recovery and proper management of electronic waste.
Improved collection arrangements are intended to reduce unsafe disposal practices and support the movement of e-waste into appropriate recycling systems.
Capacity Development
Training and capacity-building activities are intended to support informal-sector workers and other stakeholders involved in the collection, dismantling and recycling of electronic waste.
Recycling Infrastructure
The Programme also supports the expansion and strengthening of modern recycling facilities to improve Ghana’s capacity to process electronic waste in an environmentally sound manner.
Circular Economy
Electronic waste contains materials that can be recovered and returned to productive use.
Improved e-waste management therefore contributes to Ghana’s transition towards a circular economy by supporting resource recovery, recycling and reduction of waste.
Expected Contribution
The Programme is expected to strengthen Ghana’s e-waste management system, improve environmental protection and support safer and more sustainable recycling practices.
