Project Overview

About this project

Overview

The Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project (GLRSSMP) supports efforts to restore degraded landscapes and improve environmental management in areas affected by small-scale mining.

The Project contributes to Ghana’s broader environmental sustainability agenda by promoting land reclamation, environmentally responsible mining practices and sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities within mining-affected areas.

Project Objectives

The Project supports interventions aimed at:

  • restoring degraded and mining-affected landscapes;
  • improving environmental management within small-scale mining areas;
  • promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices;
  • supporting the adoption of mercury-free mining approaches;
  • reducing environmental degradation and pollution associated with mining activities; and
  • supporting alternative and sustainable livelihood opportunities for affected communities.

Land Restoration

A key component of the Project is the rehabilitation and restoration of land affected by mining activities.

These interventions are intended to support the productive and environmentally sustainable use of degraded landscapes while improving the ecological condition of affected areas.

Responsible Small-Scale Mining

The Project supports efforts to improve environmental practices within the small-scale mining sector.

This includes promoting safer and more sustainable mining methods and supporting measures to reduce the environmental and public-health risks associated with the use of mercury and other harmful substances.

Sustainable Livelihoods

The Project also supports alternative livelihood interventions intended to strengthen economic opportunities for communities and individuals whose livelihoods are associated with mining-affected areas.

Expected Contribution

Through the implementation of the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, the Ministry seeks to contribute to improved land restoration, responsible natural-resource management and more sustainable livelihoods within mining communities.
