Inauguration of Kwahu South and East Assembly

Kwahu South, Eastern Region, Ghana, February 12, 2024

Today, under the auspices of Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Sefwi and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, representing His Excellency President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, the Kwahu South and East Assembly was officially inaugurated in the Eastern region of Ghana.

In a statement delivered on behalf of President Akufo Addo, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie extended congratulations to all elected assembly and unit committee members for their successful electoral mandates. Emphasizing the constitutional provision, 30 percent of the assembly was appointed in accordance with the 1992 Constitution of the Republic, complementing the elected representatives. This inclusive approach, comprising elected officials, parliamentary representatives, and district chief executives, underscores the commitment to fostering active citizen participation in the development process.

Dr. Afriyie highlighted the importance of good governance and encouraged the assembly to establish platforms such as town hall meetings, community durbars, and digital citizen engagement tools to facilitate robust interactions between duty bearers and citizens. He underscored the significance of Sections 40 to 48 of the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936), in guiding these engagements.

In closing, Dr. Afriyie reminded the newly inaugurated assembly members of the paramountcy of selflessness, duty, accountability, and effective representation in advancing the district’s development agenda and improving the quality of life for constituents.

Following the successful inauguration, the assembly elected presiding members to oversee the affairs of Kwahu South and East, marking a significant milestone in local governance.
