Peter Justice Dery

Director, Environment Directorate

The Directorate plays a pivotal role in providing essential technical expertise and guidance throughout the Ministry’s processes concerning policy, plan, regulation, standard, program, and project development within the environment sub-sector. Comprising specialized units, it ensures comprehensive coverage and effective management of various environmental domains. The Climate Change Unit, for instance, actively facilitates policy formulation, program implementation, and international engagements concerning climate change matters. Similarly, the Biodiversity Management and Conservation Unit contributes significantly to policy development, report preparation for biodiversity conventions, and capacity building initiatives for biodiversity conservation efforts. Additionally, the Marine Resource Protection and Spatial Planning Unit focuses on crafting environmental policies to safeguard marine resources, legislating human settlement plans, raising awareness, and spearheading research for marine resource protection. The Environmental Conventions Coordination Unit oversees the signing and ratification of environmental agreements, coordinates participation in conferences, and ensures adherence to convention obligations. Furthermore, the Chemicals and Waste Management Unit is dedicated to supporting policy development, facilitating report submissions for relevant conventions, enhancing institutional capacity, and fostering international engagement in conferences related to chemicals and waste management. Together, these units form a cohesive framework aimed at advancing environmental sustainability and resilience within the Ministry’s jurisdiction.
