Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie

With a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, CBH) from the University of Ghana Medical School and a Master of Public Health (MPH) earned at Tulane University in New Orleans, USA, Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie is an accomplished professional. He also holds the esteemed position of Fellow at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie’s impressive journey includes serving as a medical Doctor and a dedicated Cocoa Farmer from 1982 to 1994. His medical career saw him contribute significantly at institutions like Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Effia Nkwanta Hospital. He further rose to the position of Health Service Director at Bibiani Government Hospital. Notably, he served as the Managing Director of Greenshields Hospital in Sefwi-Wiawso and Bekwai in the Western North Region from 2005 to 2014, and also managed Afriyie Farms from 1990 to 2016. During his tenure as a Health Minister (2001-2005), appointed by Former President H.E. John Agyekum Kuffour, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie made lasting contributions. He spearheaded the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, established the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons for Postgraduate training of Doctors, and introduced the National Ambulance System in 2004 to enhance healthcare delivery.

In the realm of governance, Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie played pivotal roles. As a key figure in President Kuffour’s government, he was a member of the cabinet sub-committee on Cocoa Affairs (2001-2005), the National Development Planning Committee (2001-2004), and the National Aids Commission. He also chaired the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana. His governmental journey continued under President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo. He served as Western Regional Minister (2017-2019) and subsequently took on the role of Minister of State at the Office of the President in charge of State Interest and Government Authority (SIGA).

Currently, Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie is the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) since 2021. He also oversees the Ghana Aids Commission. Additionally, he represents the people of Sefwi Wiawso Constituency in Ghana’s Parliament during the Seventh and Eighth Parliament (2017-2021 and 2021-2025). His parliamentary contributions include membership in committees such as Health, Privileges, Food and Agriculture, Poverty, and Gender and Children. on. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie’s dynamic journey underscores his commitment to healthcare, governance, and public service, making him an invaluable asset to Ghana’s development
