19th Africa Conference of Ministers of Environment Addresses Crucial Environmental Issues

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – August 17, 2023

The 19th Session of the Africa Conference of Ministers of Environment (AMCEN) is currently underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from August 14 to 18. Organized every two years, AMCEN serves as a pivotal platform for promoting regional cooperation among African governments and stakeholders to collectively tackle emerging environmental challenges.

This year’s conference focuses on a comprehensive array of pressing topics, including climate change and COP28 preparations, chemicals management, waste reduction and plastics management, biodiversity conservation, and enhancing environmental cooperation across the continent.

The event has attracted high-level participation from all 55 African countries, the African Union (AU), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and other esteemed international organizations. The collective assembly provides a unique opportunity for African nations to share insights, experiences, and innovative solutions in order to drive sustainable environmental progress.

Dr. Kwaku Afriyie[MP], the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, is leading Ghana’s delegation at the conference. As chair of the African Group, he is at the forefront of ongoing negotiations related to a plastics treaty. Dr. Afriyie’s dedication to sustainable environmental policies and practices is evident in his active participation in numerous bilateral meetings aimed at garnering support for Ghana’s ambitious environmental agenda.

The conference serves as a testament to the commitment of African nations to collaboratively address environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in achieving lasting solutions.
