5th WASCAL Ministerial Council Meeting Held in Accra

Accra, Ghana – November 21, 2023

Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the Honorable Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation of Ghana, presided over the 5th Ministerial Council Meeting of the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra today.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Afriyie extended gratitude to attendees from around the world, highlighting Accra’s role as the headquarters of WASCAL and warmly welcoming all participants. He commended WASCAL’s enduring commitment since its establishment in 2010, emphasizing the vital role of collective efforts in addressing climate change, especially in the lead-up to the 28th United Nations Climate Meeting (CO28) in Dubai.

The Minister praised WASCAL’s leadership and collaborative partnership with Germany, particularly in combating climate change and exploring green hydrogen. He provided examples of joint projects, such as a waste-to-energy facility funded by Germany, signifying Ghana’s shift towards clean and renewable energy sources.

Acknowledging Ghana’s dedication to climate resilience, Dr. Afriyie highlighted the nation’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution Strategy under the Paris Agreement. He outlined comprehensive policy actions focusing on sustainable energy transition, resilient economies, and social inclusion, expressing confidence in their potential for long-term positive outcomes.

Addressing the impact of climate change in Ghana, the Minister emphasized the urgency for action, resilience-building, and a transition towards a sustainable future. He concluded by stressing the shared responsibility in combating climate change and encouraged collaboration with WASCAL’s human resources and institutions.

In closing, Dr. Afriyie reiterated the significance of global thinking and regional action, urging all participants to connect and collaborate towards the mission of climate resilience. He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government of Germany for their significant investment in West Africa.

The 5th WASCAL Ministerial Council Meeting was attended by dignitaries, including Dr. Patrick Nomo, the Chief Director of the Ministry, and concluded with a call for unity towards a sustainable future.
