Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie Highlights Ghana’s Energy Transition Progress at COP28 SeForAll Panel Discussion and Engages Foreign Media

Dubai, UAE – December 4, 2023

This morning at the SDG 7 Global South Pavilion in B3 Building 33, Expo City Dubai, Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, represented Ghana with insightful remarks on the outcomes expected from COP28 and provided an overview of Sustainable Energy for All’s (SeForAll) three-year strategic plan.

Dr. Afriyie began by extending well wishes from His Excellency the President of Ghana and expressing immense pride in the evolving relationship with SeForAll. Acknowledging their pivotal role, he highlighted how SeForAll supported the launch of Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh.

The Minister shared the ambitious elevation of Ghana’s commitment, with an earlier Net-Zero target date of 2060, through the Ghana Energy Transition & Investment Plan. This strategic document, launched with the support of SeForAll on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, reflects Ghana’s dedication to sustainable energy goals.

Emphasizing Ghana’s active participation in SeForAll programs at COP28, Dr. Afriyie noted the engagement of high-level figures, including Her Excellency the Second Lady, several Ministers, and Agency heads, in events at the SDG 7 Global South Pavilion.

Excitingly, Dr. Afriyie announced the next phase of collaboration, focusing on curating actionable projects towards Ghana’s net-zero goals. This follows the landmark launch of Ghana’s national E-Vehicle policy and the announcement of a second project under the Article 6 framework in collaboration with the government of Switzerland, leading the way for carbon market proliferation in Africa.

In an additional engagement, the Minister took the opportunity to share Ghana’s perspectives on COP28 with foreign media representatives. He expressed gratitude for the continuous support of SeForAll and the Energy Transition agenda in Ghana and extended warm wishes for successful engagements at COP28.

As Ghana moves forward, Dr. Afriyie looks to the future with the hope of announcing more groundbreaking projects facilitated by SeForAll, covering electric vehicles, carbon markets, and renewable energy beyond.
