The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana, has inaugurated the National Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Steering Committee under the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded project, “Enabling Activities to Support the Ratification of the BBNJ Agreement.
”The project seeks to support Ghana’s efforts towards the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction and strengthen the country’s preparedness for the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement.
The National BBNJ Steering Committee is expected to provide strategic direction, coordination, and oversight to facilitate the effective implementation of the project. The Committee will also contribute to strengthening institutional collaboration and supporting Ghana’s readiness to meet its obligations and responsibilities under the BBNJ framework.
The inauguration represents an important step in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen marine environmental governance and promote the sustainable management of ocean resources.
