Korean National Research Foundation Officials Brief Hon Minister on Key Findings of Collaborative Projects

Accra, Wednesday, 26th February 2025 – Officials from the Korean National Research Foundation (KNFR) briefed the Honorable Minister for Environment, Science, and  Technology (MEST) on the findings of a pre-feasibility study for a new laboratory at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). They also presented details of a collaborative Artificial Intelligence (AI) project for traffic management, both of which were funded through the Science, Technology, and Innovation Official Development Assistance (STI ODA) program, supported by South Korea.

The pre-feasibility study outlined plans for establishing a state-of-the-art laboratory at CSIR, which aimed to foster cutting-edge research and innovation in the fields of science and technology. The project was expected to create an environment conducive to scientific breakthroughs and accelerate Ghana’s research capabilities, particularly in advanced technology domains.

Additionally, the AI-based traffic management project, which aimed to leverage artificial intelligence to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in urban areas, was discussed as a crucial initiative. This project aligned with the government’s vision of enhancing infrastructure and developing smarter, more sustainable cities.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Research, Statistics and Information Management Directorate (RSIM), Mr. Cephas Adjei Mensah, key officials from CSIR, and staff from MEST. The discussions focused on collaboration strategies and the next steps for implementing both projects.

The partnership with South Korea was expected to bring in valuable expertise, advanced technologies, and funding, significantly contributing to the country’s growth in science, technology, and innovation. The meeting underscored the importance of international cooperation in driving Ghana’s development agenda, particularly in research and technological advancement.

The STI ODA program marked a pivotal milestone in Ghana’s commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation, and this collaboration with South Korea was set to make a meaningful impact in addressing the country’s infrastructural challenges and fostering sustainable growth.
