Hon. Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Visited Plastic Recycling Facilities to Strengthen Circular Economy Framework

As part of his ongoing commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and circular economy practices in Ghana, the Hon. Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (MP), embarked on a significant tour on Monday, 3rd March 2025. The visit was part of the “Establishing a Circular Economy Framework for the Plastic Sector in Ghana (CEF-PS) Project,” aimed at enhancing the country’s plastic waste management and recycling systems.

Dr. Muhammed began his tour with a visit to Nelplast Eco in Katamanso-Ashaiman, a leading facility in the production of eco-friendly plastic products through recycling. This visit underscored the importance of innovative solutions in the plastic sector, as Nelplast Eco contributed significantly to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable plastic production.

Next, the Minister visited Universal Plastic Products and Recycling Ltd at Borteyman, near the Tema Motorway. The company is known for its pivotal role in plastic waste recycling and its efforts towards improving waste management systems across the country. During the visit, the Minister was briefed on the company’s operations and its contribution to the circular economy.

The Hon. Minister also visited SEA Recycling Company at the Trade Fair Centre, where he observed the company’s modern recycling processes. SEA Recycling made strides in ensuring that plastic waste was properly processed into valuable materials, which could be reused in the manufacturing of new products.

The final stop of the Minister’s visit was at the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), operated by Zoomlion at James Town. The IRECOP plant represented a key component of Ghana’s waste management infrastructure, focusing on the recycling of plastic waste and organic waste into compost and reusable materials, contributing to waste reduction and resource recovery.

During his visits, Dr. Muhammed emphasized the importance of strengthening the circular economy framework, particularly in the plastic sector, to address the challenges posed by plastic waste and promote sustainable waste management practices across Ghana. The Minister also highlighted the critical role of the private sector in driving innovation and investment in the recycling industry.

These visits were part of a broader national strategy to encourage sustainable waste management practices, reduce plastic pollution, and create a greener, more sustainable environment for the future of Ghana.
