MEST Minister Presented Certificates to Participants of the 5-Day Capacity Building Workshop for Media Excellence in STI Reporting

Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation (MEST), alongside key stakeholders, presented certificates to participants of the 5-day capacity building workshop aimed at enhancing media excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) reporting. The event, which took place at the Residency of the British High Commissioner, H.E. Harriet Thompson, on Friday, 28th February 2025, marked a significant milestone in the collaboration between Ghana and the United Kingdom under the UK-GH STI strategy.

The workshop formed a critical part of the strategy, which recognized the media as one of the four key levers for the successful implementation of STI initiatives in Ghana. With rapid advancements in science and technology, the media’s role in disseminating accurate and impactful STI information became essential in ensuring public understanding and engagement with these innovations.

Participants, drawn from a diverse range of media houses across the country, underwent intensive training to enhance their reporting skills, with a focus on how STI could contribute to the nation’s economic transformation. The training equipped journalists and media professionals with the tools to better report on STI-related issues, fostering a deeper appreciation of the link between innovation, technology, and sustainable economic development.

In addition to the training, participants were awarded grants for STI-focused projects, aimed at raising awareness of the relevance of STI in driving economic growth. These projects helped showcase how STI could be leveraged as a tool for national development, providing the media with a platform to actively participate in the conversation on technological innovation and its potential impact on society.

The UK-GH STI strategy highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving the shared goals of promoting sustainable development, with media serving as a vital connector between the government, research institutions, and the general public. The event signified the ongoing commitment of both nations to promote a future where science and technology served as key drivers of economic transformation and societal progress.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed reiterated the government’s dedication to creating an enabling environment for STI to flourish and called on the media to continue playing a central role in advancing this agenda. He emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration, stressing that media practitioners were critical in shaping the narrative around STI, making it more accessible, relevant, and impactful for the wider population.

This initiative underscored the growing recognition of the media’s role as a change agent in the science and technology space, one that could influence public opinion, policy decisions, and ultimately contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
