It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST) announces the sudden and untimely passing of our Minister, Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who tragically lost his life on 6th August 2025 in a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Murtala was on official duty, travelling to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme at Black Park, near Len Clay Stadium, Obuasi.

This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the Ministry and the nation. Ghana mourns the departure of a devoted public servant, a visionary leader, and a true patriot. Hon. Dr. Murtala Muhammed was widely admired for his exceptional blend of intelligence, humility, and moral clarity. His leadership style was grounded in simplicity and service. He was often seen driving himself to work, walking without a security detail, and engaging warmly and openly with all people including citizens, junior staff, traditional leaders, and international dignitaries. His inclusive approach fostered trust, strengthened collaboration across agencies, and helped bridge the gap between government and the people.

Under his tenure, MEST made bold and progressive strides in climate change mitigation, environmental regulation, green innovation, circular economy policy, and scientific advancement. He revitalized the Ministry’s role in national development by linking science and technology to practical and sustainable solutions. His efforts ensured that research informed policy and that Ghana’s voice was heard on regional and global environmental platforms.

A tireless advocate for youth empowerment, gender equity, and community participation, Dr. Murtala inspired a new generation of thinkers and doers. The impact of his leadership will continue to be felt through numerous national programs and initiatives that he helped shape.

His exemplary character, brilliant intellect, and unwavering sense of duty earned him respect across political divides and endeared him to colleagues, staff, development partners, and the broader Ghanaian public. His passing is not only a tremendous loss to MEST, but also a monumental loss to Ghana and the African continent, especially in the area of environmental leadership.

As we come to terms with this devastating tragedy, we take solace in the legacy he leaves behind a legacy of integrity, humility, visionary leadership, and steadfast commitment to sustainable development.

May the Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, grant Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus. May his spirit continue to guide and inspire us to serve with truth, courage, and compassion.
