The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (MP), on Thursday, 5th November 2026, hosted a delegation from the United States Embassy in Ghana at the Ministry’s Conference Room. The delegation paid a courtesy call to congratulate the Minister on her appointment and explore possible areas of collaboration between Ghana and the United States in environmental protection, scientific research and technological development.

The engagement provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange ideas on shared environmental and scientific priorities and identify areas where strengthened cooperation could contribute to addressing some of Ghana’s pressing environmental challenges.

Key issues discussed included flood monitoring and disaster management, space science and technology, illegal mining, as well as the monitoring and tracking of mercury contamination in Ghana’s water bodies.
On flood management, the Minister highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), particularly in monitoring the outcomes and impacts of flooding. She emphasised the need for closer institutional coordination and effective monitoring systems to support timely responses and improve disaster management efforts.

Discussions also explored opportunities for cooperation in space science and technology, particularly in leveraging scientific and technological innovations to support national development and environmental monitoring.
The issue of illegal mining and its associated environmental consequences also featured prominently, with particular attention to the need for improved scientific systems to monitor and track mercury contamination in water bodies. Such systems would strengthen the country’s capacity to generate reliable environmental data and support evidence-based interventions to protect water resources and public health.
The engagement reaffirmed the importance of international partnerships, knowledge exchange and institutional collaboration in addressing complex environmental challenges.
The Ministry remains committed to exploring strategic partnerships that harness science, technology and innovation to advance environmental sustainability and Ghana’s development priorities.
