Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah has formally handed over responsibility for the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST) to Hon. Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, marking the completion of the Ministry’s leadership transition.
The formal handing-over ceremony took place at the Ministry on Thursday, 3 September 2026, following the swearing-in of Hon. Dr Agyeman-Rawlings as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology by President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah had exercised oversight responsibility for the Ministry in a caretaker capacity pending the appointment and assumption of office of a substantive Minister.
As part of the ceremony, the official handing-over documents were presented to Hon. Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, signifying the formal transfer of ministerial responsibility and ensuring continuity in the administration of the Ministry.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Ministry and members of the media, who witnessed the formal transition and the exchange between the outgoing caretaker Minister and the new Minister.
The handover provides continuity in the implementation of the Ministry’s policies, programmes, projects and administrative responsibilities while enabling Hon. Dr Agyeman-Rawlings to provide policy direction and leadership in advancing the Ministry’s mandate.
Hon. Dr Agyeman-Rawlings assumes responsibility for a Ministry whose mandate covers environmental governance and protection, scientific research, technological development and innovation. These areas remain important to Ghana’s sustainable development and the Government’s broader national development agenda.
The Ministry plays a central role in coordinating interventions aimed at protecting the environment and natural resources, strengthening scientific and technological capacity, supporting research and innovation, and promoting the application of science and technology to national development.
The transition also comes at a time when Government continues to place emphasis on addressing environmental degradation, strengthening environmental regulation and enforcement, promoting scientific research and encouraging innovation as a tool for economic and social development.
Hon. Dr Agyeman-Rawlings is expected to work closely with the Ministry’s Directorates, Agencies and Units, as well as research institutions, academia, industry, development partners, civil society and other stakeholders, in pursuing the Ministry’s objectives.
The Ministry expressed its appreciation to Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah for providing leadership and oversight during the transitional period and welcomed Hon. Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as she formally assumes responsibility for the Environment, Science and Technology portfolio.
The formal handover marks a new phase in the leadership of the Ministry and reinforces the commitment to continuity, effective administration and the advancement of environmental sustainability, science, technology and innovation in support of Ghana’s development.
