Stakeholder Round Table Discussion on Roots and Tubers in Ghana and the West African Sub-region: Advancing Partnerships and Investment for Agri-Food System Transformation
The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), in collaboration with national and regional partners, successfully hosted a Stakeholder Round Table Discussion focused on the roots and tubers sector in Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.
Held under the theme “Unlocking the Potential of Roots and Tubers: Strengthening Partnerships and Investment for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems,” the event brought together key stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, agribusiness leaders, farmer organizations, development partners, and financial institutions.
Madam Suweibatu Adam, Chief Director of the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, delivered the opening address, where she emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to leveraging science, technology, and innovation to transform agriculture and improve livelihoods. She noted the critical role that roots and tubers—such as cassava, yam, sweet potato, and cocoyam—have played in ensuring food security, generating employment, and boosting regional trade.
The round table served as a strategic platform to:
-
Explore investment and partnership opportunities across the roots and tubers value chain;
-
Promote innovation and commercialization of agricultural research outputs;
-
Foster regional collaboration for policy alignment and market integration;
-
Address challenges such as post-harvest losses, limited financing, and market infrastructure gaps;
-
Support sustainable practices aligned with climate resilience and environmental goals.
Participants called for stronger public-private partnerships, increased support for agro-processing, and improved access to agricultural technologies. They expressed a shared commitment to translating ideas into concrete strategies that can drive the development of a modern, inclusive, and sustainable agri-food system.
MEST, under the leadership of Chief Director Suweibatu Adam, reaffirmed its commitment to continuing collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that science and technology remain central to agricultural transformation and economic development in Ghana and the sub-region.
