MESTI Minister, Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford (MP), Joins Second Lady Samira Bawumia for Africa Students for Climate Action and Green Ghana Day Celebrations
Accra, 7th June 2024 – Today, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford (MP), joined the Second Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Samira Bawumia, for the launch of the Africa Students for Climate Action and Green Ghana Day Celebrations in Accra.
The event, which was held at a packed venue in the capital, brought together students, environmental activists, and policymakers to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainable environmental practices across the country. Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford emphasized the government’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, highlighting the importance of initiatives like Green Ghana Day in fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among Ghanaian youth.
Second Lady Samira Bawumia commended the students for their dedication to climate action and encouraged them to continue advocating for a greener and more sustainable future. She stressed the critical role of education in empowering the next generation to tackle environmental challenges effectively.
The Africa Students for Climate Action initiative aimed to mobilize young people across the continent to actively participate in climate action efforts, aligning with Ghana’s broader commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action).
The event featured interactive sessions, tree-planting exercises, and exhibitions showcasing innovative solutions to environmental challenges developed by students and young entrepreneurs. Participants expressed optimism about the impact of youth-led initiatives in driving sustainable development and environmental conservation efforts in Ghana.
