MESTI Minister Commissions Mankesim Integrated Recycling & Medical Waste Treatment Plant

On October 10th, 2024, Hon. Ophelia Mensah-Hayford (MP), Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), attended the commissioning of the Mankesim Integrated Recycling & Composting Plant and Medical Waste Treatment Plant, a project by the Jospong Group of Companies, at Krapakrom, near Mankesim in the Central Region.

The facility marked a significant boost to Ghana’s waste management capacity. With its advanced recycling technologies and dedicated medical waste treatment systems, the plant enhanced sanitation services and contributed to environmental conservation and public health safety. It was designed to recycle both solid and organic waste, turning waste into valuable compost products for agriculture, while safely treating hazardous medical waste from hospitals and healthcare facilities.

In her speech, Hon. Mensah-Hayford emphasized the importance of the facility in tackling the environmental challenges caused by growing waste generation. She praised the Jospong Group for their investment in innovative waste management solutions and noted that such projects played a vital role in Ghana’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those concerning environmental sustainability, health, and economic growth.

The minister also highlighted that the plant created direct and indirect job opportunities for the local communities, fostered green entrepreneurship, and reduced the country’s carbon footprint. She reaffirmed MESTI’s dedication to supporting private sector collaborations to build a greener and more resilient Ghana.

The event was attended by key government officials, local chiefs, environmental advocates, and representatives from the Jospong Group. The facility was expected to serve communities in the Central Region and beyond, providing comprehensive waste management solutions while promoting the circular economy.

The commissioning of the Mankesim plant marked a major milestone in Ghana’s journey toward sustainable waste management, providing a model for future initiatives across the country.
