Korean Embassy Delegation Pays Courtesy Call on MEST Minister
A delegation from the Korean Embassy in Ghana, led by His Excellency Park Kyongsig, paid a courtesy call on the Hon. Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (MP), in Accra on Monday, 10th March 2025.
The visit aimed to strengthen the bilateral relations between Ghana and South Korea, with a focus on advancing environmental sustainability. Key areas of discussion during the meeting included addressing the environmental challenges posed by illegal mining, also known as Galamsey, and exploring collaborative solutions to mitigate its damaging effects. The delegation emphasized South Korea’s commitment to partnering with Ghana in developing sustainable mining practices and promoting responsible resource management.
Another central topic was the importance of supporting clean water initiatives in Ghana. Both sides recognized the critical need for safeguarding water resources and ensuring equitable access to clean water across the country. Discussions included potential South Korean support in water purification technologies and the development of water management systems that could be implemented in rural and underserved communities.
Additionally, the two parties discussed the growing need for reforestation and tree planting efforts to combat deforestation, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change. South Korea expressed interest in collaborating with Ghana on large-scale tree planting projects aimed at restoring degraded lands and fostering environmental resilience.
Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed highlighted the government of Ghana’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns and achieving sustainable development goals. He acknowledged the importance of international partnerships in tackling global environmental challenges and reiterated Ghana’s dedication to continuing its work with South Korea to improve environmental outcomes.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about future collaborations in the areas of environmental protection, technology exchange, and sustainable development. They also shared a commitment to deepening the bilateral ties between Ghana and South Korea, with an emphasis on long-term solutions to the environmental challenges facing both countries.
