Hon. Minister of MESTI Leads Ghana’s Delegation at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York

26th September 2024 – At the 2024 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York, the Honourable Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) of Ghana, Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford (MP), led a high-level delegation to participate in key discussions on global environmental and sustainability issues. Accompanying the Honourable Minister were the Director of the Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME) Directorate, Mrs. Lydia Obenewa Essuah, and the Director of the Environment Directorate, Dr. Peter Justice Dery.

During the assembly, Ghana’s delegation actively engaged in a range of high-impact sessions, including the Ministerial Consultations on the global Plastic Pollution Treaty. The Honourable Minister played a leading role in the session on the Means of Implementation (MoI), co-moderating with the Minister of Environment for Norway.

This vital session focused on the strategies, financing mechanisms, and international partnerships required to implement the treaty effectively, particularly in developing countries. The Minister reiterated Ghana’s commitment to addressing plastic pollution and emphasized the importance of equity and global cooperation in achieving sustainable environmental solutions.
