Hon. MESTI Minister, Ophelia Mensah-Hayford Launches the West African Coastal Area Resilience Investment Project II (WACA RESIP II) in Accra

Accra, Ghana – August 7, 2024 – The Honourable Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Hon. Ophelia Mensah-Hayford, officially launched the West African Coastal Area Resilience Investment Project II (WACA RESIP II) today at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra. This landmark event underscores the commitment to bolstering coastal resilience and promoting sustainable development across the West African region.
Hon. Ophelia Mensah-Hayford delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the urgent need for regional collaboration to address the environmental challenges threatening coastal areas. She highlighted the project’s significance in enhancing the resilience of coastal communities against the impacts of climate change.
The launch was graced by distinguished guests from various government sectors, agencies, institutions, media, and the public. These distinguished guests included;
  • Mr. Patrick Nomo, Chief Director, MESTI
  • Robert Taliercio, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone
  • Prof. Patrick K. Agbesinyal
  • Eva Mends, Chief Director, Ministry of Finance
  • Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, Chief Director, Ministry of Works and Housing
  • Representatives of Traditional Rulers from Anlo Dukor, Ngleshie Alata, and Amanfrom
  • Ken Kinney, Chair, Coastal CSOs Forum
  • Naila Ahmed, The World Bank Rep., Programme Leader.
A highlight of the event was the inauguration of the National Steering and Technical Committee Members, who will guide the project’s implementation and ensure it aligns with national and regional development priorities.
A panel discussion was also held, featuring experts who shared insights on enhancing coastal resilience and sustainable development. The panelists included;

  • Daniel Nsowah, Principal Planning Officer, MLNR
The panel discussion provided a platform for sharing best practices and innovative solutions for coastal resilience, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing the region’s environmental challenges.
The launch of WACA RESIP II represents a significant milestone in the collective effort to protect and sustainably manage West Africa’s coastal areas, ensuring the well-being of communities and promoting economic growth.
