The Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Africa of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Mr. Abebe Haile-Gabriel, recently paid a courtesy call on the Honorable Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (MP), at the Ministry’s headquarters in Accra.

The visit provided Mr. Haile-Gabriel with the opportunity to congratulate Dr. Muhammed on his recent appointment as Minister for MEST and to discuss potential collaborations between the Ministry and FAO in areas of mutual interest. The conversation focused on agricultural sustainability, the sustainable cocoa initiative, environmental management, resilience building, and poverty eradication.

Both parties acknowledged the crucial role of agriculture in promoting environmental sustainability and recognized the need for long-term strategies to ensure food security, mitigate climate change, and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the region. Mr. Haile-Gabriel emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the challenges within the agricultural sector, while also promoting sustainable practices.

Dr. Muhammed expressed gratitude for the FAO’s continued support and reiterated MEST’s commitment to fostering partnerships aimed at advancing sustainable development. The Minister also underscored the Ministry’s readiness to work closely with FAO on initiatives that seek to improve the environment and drive science and technology-based solutions for sustainable agriculture.
