Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: ORTARChI’s Professional Training Program in Kumasi
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), researchers in Ghana, through the O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chair Initiative (ORTARChI), successfully organized a two-day professional training program that empowered women entrepreneurs in the Ashanti Region. This transformative event, hosted at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Business (KSB) in Kumasi, took place from August 26–27, 2024. The program demonstrated ORTARChI’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurial growth, enhancing employability, and promoting socio-economic development in Ghana.
The training brought together a diverse group of women entrepreneurs from various sectors, including fashion design, beauty, farming, catering, cosmetology, and hairdressing. It aimed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge, and tools needed to grow their businesses, address challenges, and capitalize on opportunities in their industries.
The event began with an inspiring welcome address by Dr. Joseph Owusu, Academic Programmes Coordinator of ORTARChI at KNUST. He outlined the initiative’s objectives, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts among academia, industry, and government to enhance applied research in technology entrepreneurship and inclusive finance. Dr. Owusu highlighted the critical role of programs like this in unlocking Africa’s potential for job creation and sustainable economic growth.
Mr. Bismack Owusu Adu, the Project Finance Officer, encouraged participants to engage actively with the program, take advantage of the knowledge shared, and apply innovative strategies to their businesses for sustainable growth.
The sessions were facilitated by experienced professionals, including:
•Dr. Tweneboah-Koduah, CEO and Principal Consultant at Hipag Consulting Services
•Gifty Afi Cudjoe, PMP and Associate Consultant at Hipag Consulting Services
•Maahi Mohammed, Project Officer at Mastercard Foundation – KNUST
•Richard Agyare, Chief Operations Officer at Grassroots Hub
The facilitators covered various topics essential for business success. Participants were introduced to the “Problem Tree” tool, which helped them identify root causes of business challenges and collaboratively develop solutions. Time management strategies, such as prioritization, delegation, and focused planning, were also discussed to enhance efficiency.
The session on business communication and negotiation focused on developing clear and effective messaging, choosing the appropriate communication medium, and understanding negotiation techniques, including the concept of BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement). These skills enabled participants to manage business discussions and agreements more effectively.
In the sales and marketing session, participants explored the 7 Ps of marketing—Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Process, and Physical Evidence. Facilitators guided them in creating brand strategies, targeting the right markets, and setting marketing budgets to drive growth.
On the second day, the training emphasized financial literacy and operational management. Participants learned the importance of separating personal and business finances, maintaining accurate records, and leveraging financial tools for planning. Practical sessions on record-keeping and budgeting provided hands-on experience, ensuring participants left with actionable strategies to implement immediately in their businesses.
The event concluded with a tour of the Kumasi Business Incubator, where participants explored additional opportunities for business growth and development. Certificates of Honour were awarded to recognize their commitment and participation.
The Project Manager, Mr. Michael Nyamekye, commended the entrepreneurs for their enthusiasm and dedication to learning. He reiterated ORTARChI’s commitment to empowering women and driving inclusive development across Africa, acknowledging MESTI’s vital role in supporting the success of such initiatives.
This training program highlighted the significant potential of women entrepreneurs in Ghana and underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in building a resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem.
