Director of Administration, Mr. Constant Gladza, Inaugurated the 2024 National Climate Change and Green Economy Week on Behalf of Hon. MESTI Minister
Accra, Wednesday, 16th October 2024 – The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) successfully launched the 2024 National Climate Change and Green Economy Week in Accra. Mr. Constant Gladza, Director of Administration, inaugurated the event on behalf of the Hon. MESTI Minister, Ophelia Mensah-Hayford (MP). The week-long celebration, themed “Greening Education – Changing Mindset, Changing Lifestyle,” aimed to inspire a nationwide shift toward more sustainable living and environmental consciousness through education.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Gladza emphasized the significance of addressing climate change through education and behavioral change. He noted that the theme reflected the need for society to rethink its approach to sustainability, starting with changes in mindset and lifestyle. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to climate action and the green economy, stressing that collaboration across all sectors was essential for achieving Ghana’s climate goals.
Activities for the 2024 National Climate Change and Green Economy Week included
- Street Procession: A colorful and vibrant procession engaged the public, raising awareness about climate change and the importance of sustainable practices.
- Opening Ceremony: The launch was followed by a National Symposium and Exhibition, where experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and environmentalists discussed innovative solutions to climate change challenges. The exhibition showcased green technologies, sustainable products, and services contributing to Ghana’s climate objectives.
- Climate Change Quiz: Students from various schools participated in a Climate Change Quiz designed to promote knowledge of environmental issues and encourage young people to engage in sustainable practices.
The week’s activities fostered collaboration among diverse groups, including government agencies, educational institutions, industry players, and civil society organizations. These engagements were aimed at broadening the scope of climate education and involving the public in discussions on how individuals and institutions could contribute to environmental preservation and the development of a resilient green economy.
In her statement, read on her behalf by Mr. Gladza, Hon. Ophelia Mensah-Hayford (MP) commended the focus on climate change education, stating, “Greening education is not just about providing information, but also about equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions that positively impact the environment.” She also urged Ghanaians to embrace lifestyle changes that align with the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The 2024 National Climate Change and Green Economy Week ran through the week, with regional activities across the country, ensuring that the message of climate action and sustainability reached all corners of Ghana.
